More than ever before I recognize the need to pray for my children and grandchildren. It’s not because I don’t pray already, but I sense that I don’t pray enough.
Kids are growing up in a world so different than the world we grew up in. They have the pressures of an imploding culture, trying to fit in, school work, sports, avoidance of bullies, fashion, and lost morality. Yes, we faced some of those same issues, but I think the pressure today is greater. It’s also complicated by 4-5 hours of homework every night and the possible thought of the extreme violence that plagues our current world.
This should drive us to pray fervently over our children in the following ways:
● Pray for their protection- Ask God to build a wall around them every day to keep away those who want to harm them. Mean kids, bullies, ungodly teachers...anyone that the enemy could use to emotionally, physically, or spiritually attack them. Remember, their enemy wants to “...steal, kill, and destroy…” them. (John 10:10)
● Pray for them to make good choices - Ask the Lord to help them make good choices when they are confronted between right and wrong. Since they were little I have told my children, “I know it’s hard out there, but I also know that you are going to make the right choice!” I wanted them to know I believed that they wouldmake the right decision because the Holy Spirit was going to teach them, guide them, and remind them what to do. (John 14:26)
● Pray for their soul - The enemy doesn’t want to go to hell alone. He wants to take my kidsand grandchildren withhim. They can be spiritually weak as they grow and may not have enough life experience to stand against the world or see how clever satan is. I didn’t try to frighten them but I wanted them to remember he is the enemy of their life and like an animal he is on the prowl looking for someone to hurt (I Peter 5:8).
Teach them and pray over them these scriptures:
Psalm 41:2 “The Lord will protect him and keep him alive, and he shall be called blessed upon the earth; and do not give him over to the desire of his enemies.”
Ecclesiastes 7:12 “For wisdom is protection just as money is protection, but the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the lives of its possessors.”
Deuteronomy 6:5 “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.”
Galatians 1:10 “Obviously, I’m not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant.”
2 Timothy 2:22 “Now flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, with those who call upon the Lord from a pure heart.”
As a parent and grandparent, my prayers have only expanded. I suppose that call will never stop. Even as I write this the enemy is trying to devour one of my grandchildren. But I am praying hard and battling in prayer for her because I am confident the enemy will NOT win!
So I encourage you to battle for your children through prayer. Ask the Holy Spirit to wash over their heart, their mind and their spirit. Declare the Word over them. Now is the time. It’s never too late. God has a plan for their life and it is our responsibility to direct them and pray for them to walk in the right way. Prayer can accomplish what our flesh cannot do. So pray hard and pray often for your children.
