A Case for Compassion

I’ll always remember entering the abortion clinic with life inside of me and leaving with a void, emptiness and detachment so confusing that I felt less than human; only to be met by the hurtful shouts, signs and stones hurled by protesters. The most heavy and haunting stone of all was being called a “murderer”! I felt the piercing conviction of a wound so deep that I accepted, adopted, and attached to this label of degradation repeatedly in mind. This was a wound that new age quotes or a self-proclaimed guru could not cure. Only the hand of an omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient God could stoop down; with His finger and write in me and my accusers’ faces; lift Himself up and say to us, “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone... (John 8)”. I was an emotionally dysfunctional recluse after that unforgettable day. I’d wear negative self-talk, condemnation, and criticism like it were a designer outfit. All thoughts of self-worth ceased and I was fruitless in the eyes of man. BUT to Jesus I was, clearly, A CASE for COMPASSION; a compassion I’d learn more of and see woven in and through the lives of men and women written about in His Word.

“For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him (John 3:17).” “My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but for the sins of the whole world. And by this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep his commandments. Whoever says, “I know Him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, but whoever keeps His word, in Him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in Him.”

I embraced His compassion and it ushered in repentance, reconciliation, recovery, and restoration. Then I would come to know Him as my truth – The truth.

A truth that, also, includes a defeated adversary who stirs up conflict, Satan. He has always targeted mothers (man) and their seed; ever since God breathed life into Adam and her. Eve was deceived and became a sinner; however, she has been saved through childbearing – the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ (1 Timothy 2:14); including the rest of us who confess with our mouth and believe in our hearts that Jesus died on the cross and rose again that we should not die but have everlasting life (Romans 10:9-10). I am beyond grateful, that He came so that we may live life abundantly.

The devil, on the other hand, is very crafty and deceptive. He goes around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8). His only intent is to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). One of the ways he’s done this is by planting the plan of abortion, a deliberate termination of a pregnancy, in the hearts of man. When you have a vision where profits outweigh the people, we perish (Proverbs 29:19). Abortion was legalized in 1967 and amended in 1990. Since then millions of women, counting myself, including but not limited to (abort73.com):

  • Unmarried woman | 86% of women who terminated their pregnancy

  • African American | 28% of women who terminated their pregnancy

  • Domestic Partner | 25% of women who terminated their pregnancy

  • Medicaid Recipient | 3x’s women than that of other women

  • No prior live births | 47% of women who terminated their pregnancy

  • No previous abortions | 56% of women who terminated their pregnancy

I had been duped and deceived by even being presented with this as an option. In hindsight, I know that the root cause of my sinful choice was due to rejection of God’s word, a deficient relationship with Him, and ungodly counsel. At the time of my abortion, I was so embarrassed that many of the above circumstances reflected my life’s situation. Bearing the responsibility of another human being and exposing them to so much disorder would complicate things even more. So, I put my trust in self and with my back up against the wall, did the unthinkable. I dare not tell a soul and vowed to carry this secret to the grave – so, I thought.

God had a different plan, one that included an Intercessor, Substitute, and Savior. Boy - am I forever grateful for His plan of redemption and His Son, Jesus! Even before the foundations of the earth were formed, it included you and me. A plan in which He would get the glory and turn our mess into a message, our pain into purpose, and our test into a testimony. He knew the decisions we would make and if you’re reading this, I want you to know that no amount of destruction you’ve caused or experienced will keep you from His love.  “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let us be tempted beyond what we can bear. But when we are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that we can endure it (1 Corinthians 10:13). We are all but A CASE for COMPASSION in the hands of an Almighty God, created in His image. When we choose to obey and follow Him, we are choosing eternal life! He will complete the work of shaping and molding us into His likeness.

Life after abortion is a journey of healing and hope. Through church, we have a soft-landing place and within communities like Mom Mentor we can express our identity in Christ - as children of God; honor Him through worship - in spirit and truth; repent and seek forgiveness daily; find answers in the bible; and live life for His glory. Personally, I’ve inherited nourishment for my mind, body, soul, and spirit. I’m walking fully forgiven and holding firmly to faith, in my Heavenly Father, that I will see my child face to face someday. For it is He who “…created her inmost being; He knit her together in my womb…all the days ordained for her were written in His book… (Psalm 139:14).” As converted Children of God we can hate the sin and love the sinner. Let’s agree to embrace purpose, pair it with compassion and wield it as a weapon against the enemy to change the narrative concerning abortion.
